Icing on the top, literally

These days we generally use soft icing (eg. ganache or buttercream) or hard icing (eg. marzipan or fondant) to decorate with. Soft icing has been around for a long time but I believe hard icing that resembles play-doh has only become popular in the past few decades (please correct me if I’m wrong). Incidentally, fondant ready-to-roll is the only icing I use for my cakes - cupcakes are another matter. That makes me think… if cake decorating is still evolving, what kinds of cakes are we going to see in the next 10, 20 years, or even the next century. It boggles the mind!
